Let’s just say that there is no wrong vehicle, and the only person that can answer that question is you yourself. There are many factors to consider when heading down the road of making a decision on what vehicle is right for your needs. You have to start making a list of all the activities and accommodations you may need based on how many people will be needing space. What daily necessities are needed to make your life on the road what you have envisioned it to be. There is also the question of gear. What activities are you going to do and what gear will need to be stored in your vehicle. That list can get extremely long, or short depending on what activities you participate in.
Kayaking
Skateboarding
Cycling
Rock climbing
Base jumping
Bungee jumping
Surfing
Painting
Musical instruments
Boldering
Disc-golf
The list is really endless. This is just gear for those specific activities and doesn’t include other inportant everyday items. Items like clothes, shoes, jackets, gloves, headwear, socks, and underwear. Then we could start on personal hygiene items, and I will spare us that list of goodies. Onward to towels, any tools you may want to have on hand. If you have a pet or pets, you need to make sure there is adequate space for their needs as well. Then there is food storage, water and cookware, plates and silverware, spices and cooking utensils, on and on and on it goes. I think you see where I’m going with this. There is an absolutely infinite list of items you may need to account for and have space for. Let’s not forget to think about weight as that is a very important factor to consider. The type of vehicle you choose may or may not be able to handle the additional weight of all your items you plan on having on hand. I will say that less is always more in these scenarios.
I have seen everything from cars to huge busses that have been converted to allow for this lifestyle. Again there is no wrong vehicle. That said there are wrong vehicles if you are exceeding the safe weight capacity of that vehicle. It is just not safe to do that as it will stress the suspension brakes and even the engine as well. I can speak from experience having put myself in a situation that had me scared to death coming down a high mountain pass and smelling my brakes and realizing that I had almost lost all of my braking ability. I was able to find a place to pull over and let my brakes completely cool down to where they would function again. Please trust me when I say Nobody wants to be in that's situation as it can become deadly very fast, for you or others on the road.
So the best way to start is to make yourself a list of activities and daily items you want to have with you. Then account for the number of people , pets, and so on to come up with a size and potential weight capacity you will require. Also keep in mind possible future proofing you vehicle by thinking of things down the road that you may do or need or want to incorporate as well. This is a very important step. Many people have started out in one vehicle and quickly realized that it was insufficient for their true needs after spending a few weeks in their newly built out adventure vehicle. I will help you figure all these things out to make sure you have chosen the appropriate vehicle for your needs. We have to consider all the weight of the systems that you choose as well. Water and battery bank being some of the heavier items that have to be accounted or. That list goes on and on as well. Planning thoroughly and thoughtfully is an extremely important step, as it insurers a high success level of getting it all right the first time around. Nobody wants to build out a vehicle and then shortly come to find that they didn’t thoroughly consider everything in the build properly just to have to sell that one and start over. So plan, plan, and plan some more and you can avoid this scenario all together.
I enjoy helping people figure these things out and answering all their questions. There are no dumb questions EVER! so please feel free to ask away to find the answers you are looking for. Let’s get you started on your journey today by starting to plan out what your adventure vehicle looks like. I look forward to working with you on your dream of a better different and I guarantee you never boring lifestyle.
